Job Purpose

This role is responsible for coordinating the work activity for hourly employees, represented by the United Steel Workers, who performing audit inspection functions, gage metrology, product metrology, gear quality inspections, and salvage/rework tasks.  The Quality Supervisor must determine the daily needs of the business and prioritize the work assignments with hourly Team Leaders.  

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The work activity includes incoming and in-process inspections of production parts and assemblies, layout inspections, quality audits, gage inspections and calibrations, and appropriately, inspections of suspected nonconforming materials.  The Supervisor must assist these activities by helping lead containment and quarantining suspect product.  Assist in making decisions with respect to final disposition of nonconforming materials, when necessary.

 

The Supervisor determines, when necessary, who has the primary responsibility for timely disposition of nonconforming material.  This requires that he/she arranges for and/or contacts the affected supplier or customer.  The supplier or customer can be internal or external to the Plant.

 

Communication will be verbal and written. The department maintains a communications log which the Supervisor is expected to use daily.  He/she is expected to communicate verbally with his/her counterpart at the beginning and end of the shift every day.
    
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Overtime work is required when necessary.  This person may be required to substitute for other people to fill in for vacations and sickness appropriate to skill level.  This could involve working other shifts.

 

He/she completes or authorizes forms and reports, and maintains records such as overtime, absences, payroll and material rejections.

 

The Supervisor will be the primary contact for Quality issues.  This will include receiving calls from customers reporting quality concerns, for which the Supervisor is expected to initiate timely internal reporting and short term containment actions.  

 

Due to customer concerns, occasional travel is required, at times on short notice, to customer plants.  These may be overnight trips.   
 

The supervisor must be able to perform a weekly LPA (Layered Process Audit) and assist the Quality and Engineering Teams with the completion of Control Plan / PFMEA / Process Audits.
    

Required Training & Experience:
•    Bachelor’s degree & 3 years minimum quality manufacturing experience or 7 years quality manufacturing experience.
•    Strong background in compliance/adherence to process for themselves, their direct reports and all others within the organization
•    Demonstrated strength of character to succeed in high pressure manufacturing environment    
•    Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing desirable.
•    Possess knowledge of current product or experience in metal machining operations and assembly desirable.  
•    Experience working within a unionized manufacturing facility 


Preferred Experiences
•    Must possess good organizational skills and be proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook
•    Able to make fundamental mathematical calculations.
•    Physically capable of disassembly/assembly of product, e.g., axle assemblies.
•    Proven mechanical aptitude.
•    Proficient communication skills in the English language.
•    Possess knowledge in the application of measurement equipment (gages and gaging systems).
