Job Purpose
The Gear Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining manufacturing processes for gear production. This role involves applying engineering principles to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness in gear machining and assembly operations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
With minimal supervision, develop & maintain CNC programs for pinion & ring blanking, including overseeing & directing cutting tool & work holding selection & design. Will request quotations from vendors, compose RFA’s (Request For Appropriation), cost justifications & specify &/or 3rd shifts as required.
GENERAL
• Lead cross functional team (maintenance, automation, operations, etc) for new product launches & process troubleshooting.
• Develop & update documentation, including process sheets, PFMEA’s & Control Plans
• Develop Team Leaders in production departments
• Resolve quality & tooling issues
• Assist in troubleshooting process
• Train & teach the Production Supervisors
• Develop layouts to facilitate Dana’s production system.
• Coordinate all Sales Inquiries & Program Launches through APQP
o This includes coordinating the manufacture & movement of pre-production material through the production departments
• Develop & maintain Poka-Yoke devices
• Develop & maintain automation solutions for manufacturing
ESTIMATING
• Responsible for timely completion of all estimates
• Obtain quotations for new capital & tooling as needed
• Blackboard or directional estimates as required
BUSINESS UNIT
• Capacity analysis
• Involved in Business Unit manufacturing strategy
• Planning of equipment moves within Ft Wayne & Business Unit
• Protective clothing required.
• Loud noise in certain areas of the plant may require the use of approved ear protection.
• PPE per facility safety requirements
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or related engineering or technology field w/CNC programming capability & a minimum of 3 yrs experience.
• Must be able to read & interpret engineering drawings & specifications, including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) standards
• Must have proven mechanical aptitude, knowledge of the proper usage & application of measuring equipment.
• Work effectively, efficiently & a self-starter
• Demonstrate proficient written/verbal communication skills in the English language.
• Use various computer operating systems & software as necessary. Include, but are not limited to, PC applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc), & machine specific operating system & software applications.
• Strong problem solving techniques.
• Must be able to work inside & outside the plant unsupervised for extended periods of time.
• Must be available to flex shifts & work on weekends to support the engineering &/or production system.
• On short notice & be able to travel to machine manufacturers, customers, suppliers, & other locations when required. Travel may span several days, may be out of the country, & at times are on short notice.
• May be required to attend a variety of gear manufacturing courses, tool shows, gear shows, & seminars which may require weeks to complete & may require foreign travel.
• Must have or be eligible for a passport for foreign travel, & have a valid driver’s license.
Recommended:
• Thorough knowledge of face milling, face-hobbing, grinding, turning, heat treatment & other processes used in the manufacture of gears.
• Prior experience with an organized labor force.
